Salary
£33,000 - £37,000 per annum plus London Weighting (£5,441 per annum), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. Flexible working options are available and will be discussed at offer stage.

About the Role
BBC Monitoring (BBCM) is a key part of the BBC's newsgathering operation, providing news and information from monitoring open source media across more than 150 countries in over 70 languages. Our team delivers insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news, used by various BBC platforms as well as UK government and commercial clients.

As a Journalist, you will join a high-performing team focused on understanding the Chinese media environment, narratives aimed at domestic and international audiences, media trends, and China’s global influence through international and regional media including Hong Kong and Taiwan. The role involves data-led journalism and using technology to mine media for information and story ideas.

Your key responsibilities include following Chinese broadcast, print and online media daily to report on developments, producing content in native-level English in approved BBC Monitoring formats, collaborating with colleagues across BBCM and BBC teams, mentoring freelancers, and staying current with global news and technological advances relevant to data-led journalism.

Requirements

Experience
Proven editorial judgement, flair and excellent news writing skills.
Native-level fluency in Mandarin Chinese with thorough knowledge of China’s media narratives and environment.
Ability to write engaging, native-level English suitable for multiple platforms.
Interest in international news and media developments globally.
Demonstrated alignment with BBC’s values in your work.

Desirable
Experience in data-led journalism.
Proficiency with new technologies, including potential AI applications and safeguards.

You are adaptable, collaborative, and eager to engage with innovative journalistic techniques including data-led approaches. You are committed to producing accurate, insightful content that meets the needs of BBC Monitoring’s diverse audience.

Qualifications
