About the Role
As a Lead Software Engineer (Android), you will be an advocate for engineering, providing a voice to engineers within your teams and supporting them in resolving impediments and issues. This leadership role blends deep domain and technical expertise with a passion for coaching and developing people in a "player-coach" model. You will aim to deliver the highest quality customer-driven software while continually challenging, motivating, mentoring, and supporting your engineering teams. Working within cross-disciplinary teams, you will deliver exciting customer-focused solutions and high-quality software. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential as you work efficiently across the project lifecycle to ensure software operates as intended.

What you'll do
- Work as part of a self-organised engineering team to design and develop software features or services that are vital to our mission to help Britain prosper.
- Act as a technical leader within your team and beyond, coaching and mentoring junior engineers.
- Collaborate with product and engineering leads to achieve vision and customer outcomes by writing well-factored and tested code.
- Maintain curiosity about technology and how things work, positively influencing the team by demonstrating the right values and behaviours as we improve delivery.
Experience
- Proven experience as a capable technical lead taking ownership of delivery.
- Strong programming skills with good working knowledge of Kotlin and modern toolsets such as Git, Android Studio, JUnit, Espresso, and Jenkins.
- Diverse technical experience with a proven ability to deliver high-quality applications at scale.
- Strong knowledge of security patterns and best practices is advantageous.
- Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate across engineering teams to maximise inner-sourcing opportunities and reduce waste.
- Advocate for quality, supporting teams by leveraging approaches such as Pair Programming, Test-Driven Development (TDD), and Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD).
