Introduction
The Parliamentary Health and Wellbeing team delivers a Bicameral service to the House of Commons, House of Lords, and the Parliamentary Digital Service (a joint department of both Houses). Most services are delivered to around 4,000 employees with further support and advice provided to the 650 individual Members of Parliament and their 3,000 employees together with services to 800 peers within the House of Lords. The strategic aim of Parliament is to support a thriving parliamentary democracy.
The Role
The Occupational Health Technician will contribute to the delivery of Occupational Health and Wellbeing services to the Parliamentary community, working within the multidisciplinary Parliamentary Health and Wellbeing team. This includes participation in new employee health and fitness to work assessments, health surveillance, identification of workplace risk, health promotion, wellbeing roadshows, and emergency response for those working across the Parliamentary Estate and includes phone or virtual advice to those working remotely.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include:
Undertake health surveillance, including spirometry, peak flow, audiology, skin, hand arm vibration and functional mobility assessment under the indirect supervision of an Occupational Health Specialist Practitioner or Occupational Health Physician
Undertake physical health assessments, including visual acuity, colour vision, height, weight, blood pressure, pulse and urinalysis
Undertake lifestyle and wellbeing assessments, including glucose and cholesterol testing, BMI and waist circumference measurements, dietary, sleep, stress, resilience and exercise advice
Undertake Display Screen Equipment, lone worker, food handling and night worker assessments
Report any abnormal findings outside of defined protocols and action recommendations as advised or agreed by the supervisor
Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
Experience in managing and delivering a programme of health surveillance including new starter, safety critical, driver, lone worker, noise, respiratory, skin, vibration and other medicals protecting and promoting the health and safety of our workforce within legal and statutory requirements.
Experienced in undertaking and delivering health and wellbeing assessments, providing individual tailored lifestyle advice to promote and maintain optimal physical and mental health.
Understands the importance of evidence-based practice and robust clinical governance.
Ability to work successfully and collaboratively within a team, whilst upholding the values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
