About the Role
Join Cygnet Hospital Beckton as a Band 5 Occupational Therapist on the New Dawn Ward, a specialist 18-bed Tier 4 Personality Disorder service for women diagnosed with personality disorder who exhibit self-harming behaviour. The ward supports both informal patients and those detained under the Mental Health Act. You will be responsible for providing direct clinical care including OT assessments, treatment, and management of individuals, developing and implementing personalised OT treatment programmes based on assessment findings and associated risks within a multidisciplinary team (MDT). You will also supervise one OT Assistant following preceptorship and report to the Head of Occupational Therapy.
The MDT includes nurses, doctors, psychologists, psychology assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, social therapists, and social workers, ensuring comprehensive support and safety for service users while promoting their independence. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical skills in a supportive environment with a low caseload to enable intensive OT interventions.
As part of a large network of over 150 occupational therapists across the Cygnet Group, you will benefit from extensive peer support, specialist interest groups, and dedicated CPD time covering areas such as Mental Health, Neuropsychiatry, Autism, Learning Disabilities, and Sensory Integration.
Experience
- Some experience in adult mental health is desirable but not essential
- Currently working as a Band 5 OT or newly qualified Occupational Therapist

- Registered Occupational Therapist with HCPC
- Member of RCOT
- Understanding of Occupational Therapy processes and interventions with a hands-on approach
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Passionate about student education and clinical development
- Ability to manage demanding clinical presentations
- Able to effectively lead a team with support from senior OT staff
Qualifications
- Registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Membership of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT)
