About the Role
This role involves managing a designated caseload of patients with complex needs across a rotational scheme including Elderly, General Medicine, Stroke Unit, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Complex Neurological conditions (including major trauma), and Community Rehabilitation. You will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate client-centred, evidence-based occupational therapy interventions to maximise patient independence and wellbeing.
Key responsibilities include assessing and treating patients, conducting cognitive and perceptual testing, performing risk assessments, advising on aids and adaptations, and carrying out home and community visits. You will participate in discharge planning, coordinate complex cases, and work as a lone practitioner in community settings with appropriate support.
Effective communication with patients, carers, multidisciplinary teams, and other agencies is essential. You will participate in team meetings, case conferences, and provide education on equipment and safety.
Maintaining accurate records and reports in line with professional and Trust standards is required. You will adhere to the COT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, ensuring confidentiality and respect for patient dignity.
The role includes leadership responsibilities such as supervising and appraising junior/support staff, delegating tasks, and deputising for senior staff when required. You will also be involved in training and supervising occupational therapy students, delivering presentations, and organising departmental training.
Service development duties include managing equipment stock, supporting timely and safe patient discharges, assisting with policy implementation, and contributing to service improvement initiatives.
Continuous professional development is expected through participation in training and maintaining a professional portfolio to demonstrate competence and fitness to practise as a senior occupational therapist.
Experience
Experience managing a complex caseload in acute and community settings is desirable. Ability to assess, plan, and deliver occupational therapy interventions across a range of clinical areas including elderly care, stroke, surgery, orthopaedics, and neurological conditions.
Experience supervising and appraising junior staff and students is advantageous.
