About the Role
We believe that the best place for children is to be raised within their own families, immediate or wider, wherever it is safe and appropriate to do so. In Tower Hamlets we are committed to building relationships and strengthening families by working with people in a compassionate and understanding way.
We are ambitious for Tower Hamlets children and families and endeavour for every child and young person to be healthy, safe and successful.
Tower Hamlets is a progressive, ambitious and diverse place to work. We place children and families at the heart of everything that we do and are relentless in our pursuit of positive outcomes for all.
Our Better Together Practice Framework is based on Restorative Practice and draws from other strength-based approaches, such as Systemic and Trauma Informed Practice.
Our C-Change approach: Connect, Curious, Community, Co-Produce, Collaborate, Check, sets out the “6 Cs” for our work with children, young people, their parents and carers, and each other.
We are looking to recruit a Parent & Carer Support Worker on a Fixed Term Contract for one year.
The co-located Exploitation Service offers an exciting opportunity to work directly with parents and carers of children and young people who are at risk of harm outside of the home. The purpose of the role is to provide support to a cohort of parents and carers of children who are at risk of exploitation and serious youth violence. It also aims to prevent offending and re-offending by young people by providing an effective service to young people and their carers. Furthermore, the role involves raising awareness with children, families, communities and professionals around the issues of exploitation, serious youth violence and associated risks.
You will work within the multi-agency Exploitation Team where we are developing an innovative harm outside the home approach to issues around exploitation, missing and serious youth violence. You will need good people skills and experience of engaging young people effectively. You will have a caring nature and an ability to work creatively to engage parents and carers who are at risk of harm outside of the home. You will work within a team approach and with other professionals and local organisations to identify and address the issues that young people face as a result of exploitation and serious youth violence. This will be underpinned by empowering, anti-oppressive, trauma informed and culturally competent practice (training will be provided).
Tower Hamlets vision for our borough is that people are aspirational, independent and have equal access to opportunities; we are a borough that our residents are proud of and love to live in; and we are a dynamic, outcomes-based council using digital innovation and partnership working to respond to the changing needs of our borough. We want people who aspire to our TOWER values: Together; Open; Willing; Excellent; Respect.
Tower Hamlets has a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination and works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital status, status as a civil partner, gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and maternity. We seek to employ a diverse workforce representative of these groups and recognise that people can also be disadvantaged by social and economic circumstances, so we work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class.
We are a Disability Confident Employer, guaranteeing an interview to applicants who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the post. Care experience has also been adopted by the Council as an additional protected characteristic.
We welcome applicants interested in flexible working arrangements and those who live in the borough.
Experience
Experience of engaging young people effectively and working with parents and carers at risk of harm outside the home is essential. Experience working within multi-agency teams and with local organisations is desirable.
Experience or understanding of issues related to exploitation, serious youth violence, and harm outside the home is beneficial.
About you
You will have a caring and compassionate nature, with the ability to work creatively and empathetically to engage parents and carers. You should be able to work collaboratively within a team and with external professionals.
You will demonstrate empowering, anti-oppressive, trauma informed and culturally competent practice. A commitment to the values of Tower Hamlets (Together; Open; Willing; Excellent; Respect) is important.
You should be motivated to contribute to positive outcomes for children, young people, parents and carers in a diverse and dynamic community.
