Introduction
The Petitions Committee team provides support and advice for all aspects of the work of the Committee and the online process for petitioning Parliament (http://petition.parliament.uk). Headed by the Clerk of the Committee, the team is responsible for checking petitions, overseeing the management of the website, engaging with the public on petitioning and popular petitions, and enabling the day-to-day functioning of the Committee.
The Petitions Committee team is part of the Chamber and Participation Team. This team provides the core services that facilitate Members' legislative and scrutiny work in the House of Commons Chamber, Westminster Hall, general committees and some related select committees, and engages the public with parliamentary business.
The Role
The Petitions Engagement and Communication Manager works as part of the Petitions Committee team to engage members of the public and Members of Parliament with petitions and the work of the Committee. You will work closely with the Senior Petitions Engagement and Communications Manager and the Head of Petitions Engagement.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include:
Leading and collaborating with others, on public engagement activities. These activities enable people to share their experiences of an issue raised by a petition with MPs. You might be organising engagement events or running digital engagement, such as online surveys or engaging with online forums.
Reviewing and summarising people's responses to public engagement activities to feed back to MPs on the Committee and to publish externally, for example through social media posts or press releases.
Maintaining records of the Committee's public engagement work, including statistics and details of best practice, and reporting this back to the Committee.
Contributing to communications with petitioners updating them on parliamentary business relating to their petition.
Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
Evidence of excellent written and oral communications skills, with the ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate them accurately and effectively to different audiences.
Experience of engaging successfully with a range of people, with an awareness of audience diversity and an ability to tailor messages to attract the interest of people from a broad range of backgrounds.
Evidence of an ability to work successfully independently and within a team, including an ability to remain focused under pressure, organise priorities and tackle complex tasks and issues.
Interest in Parliament and/or current affairs, and evidence of ability to manage risk.
Evidence of a commitment to diversity and inclusion in your work.
