About the Role
The Pharmacy Technician will work as part of the multidisciplinary general practice team to support safe, effective and efficient medicines optimisation. You will play a vital role in improving patient safety, supporting prescribing quality and ensuring robust medicines governance systems are in place within the practice.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting safe and efficient repeat prescribing processes and ensuring accurate processing of prescription requests with queries from different sources
- Assisting with medication queries from patients, community pharmacies and prescribers, forwarding recommendations for alternatives
- Carrying out medicines reconciliation for discharge letters, outpatient letters and new patient registrations, identifying and resolving discrepancies in liaison with pharmacists and GPs
- Promoting medicines synchronisation and encouraging patient adherence
- Supporting implementation of local and national prescribing initiatives, including performing medication switches as directed by prescribers or pharmacists
- Maintaining MHRA alerts and high risk drug monitoring records
- Supporting safe prescribing and monitoring of high risk medicines and patient recalls in accordance with local SOPs
- Undertaking the CPPE (Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway) if not already completed
- Providing training and guidance to non-clinical staff to support prescription processes within the practice
- Leading or contributing to audits and quality improvement projects related to safe and effective prescribing using SystmOne clinical system
- Analysing prescribing data and sharing learning with the wider team
- Managing medication-related patient queries and escalating appropriately
- Providing advice and information to patients on safe medicines use, supporting patient education, adherence, self-care and promoting patient self-management
- Maintaining GPhC registration and adhering to practice policies, clinical governance frameworks and safeguarding procedures
- Developing and maintaining effective relationships within the team and with local stakeholders including ICB teams, community pharmacists and hospital pharmacy teams
- Engaging in continuous professional development and attending clinical and educational meetings within the practice
Experience
Experience working within a pharmacy or healthcare setting is desirable but not explicitly stated. Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and manage medicines optimisation processes effectively is essential.

Detail-oriented and proactive individual committed to patient safety and quality prescribing. Strong communication skills to liaise with patients, prescribers, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. Able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and contribute to quality improvement initiatives. Willingness to undertake further education and training such as the CPPE pathway.
Qualifications
Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy Technician. Completion or willingness to undertake the CPPE Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway if not already completed. Adherence to professional standards and continuous professional development is required.
