About the Role
If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives, HM Treasury offers an exciting opportunity to influence decision making that affects the whole of the UK. Working at the heart of government, you will collaborate across departments to promote responsible public spending and drive strong and sustainable economic growth.

The Strategy Unit is part of the Darlington Economic Campus, a cross-government hub bringing people together to tackle key national issues while working closer to the communities we serve.

This is a fascinating, stretching and high-profile role in HMT’s Strategy Unit. We are recruiting for an ambitious, proactive, committed and intellectually curious individual who wants to develop their career, learn new skills and test themselves in a fast-paced and influential team.

The successful candidate will work closely with Permanent Secretaries and Directors General on the issues which matter most to the continued effectiveness of the Treasury and be at the centre of decision-making on the Treasury’s future. You will receive support and development opportunities to thrive.

You will need excellent judgement and be comfortable presenting ideas to senior colleagues and working closely with them to shape and deliver priorities. A passion for public service and improving the Treasury’s effectiveness to deliver better outcomes for the country and its citizens is essential.

The role is dynamic and will evolve in line with Ministers’ and senior officials’ priorities. Projects and portfolios are flexed around individual strengths, experiences and interests, with quarterly team reviews.

Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating the department’s approach to prioritising its work and setting out what the Treasury wants to achieve, collaborating closely with senior officials and Ministers.
- Supporting decisions to align HMT’s resources with its priorities, including through the Business Planning process.
- Supporting the development of the department’s organisational strategy to enhance effectiveness and efficiency, producing briefings and advice for senior officials and Ministers.
- Taking ownership of discrete projects commissioned by senior stakeholders, developing knowledge rapidly to support evidence-based solutions.
- Providing secretariat support for senior meetings, including the monthly Directors’ Forum.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, representing the Strategy Unit and HM Treasury.

This role offers an excellent foundation for a successful career at HM Treasury, providing regular contact with senior officials and insight into departmental operations. Previous team members have progressed to policy roles in priority projects, tax, and growth teams.

Requirements

Experience
We welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds, including those both inside and outside government. You should demonstrate:
- Ability to think and act strategically, identifying opportunities for effective change and using multiple sources of evidence to make decisions.
- Capability to deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and meeting tight deadlines.
- Comfort in building and maintaining relationships, gaining trust of senior stakeholders and communicating clearly and persuasively, including public speaking.

About you
You are ambitious, proactive, committed and intellectually curious. You have excellent judgement and are passionate about public service and improving organisational effectiveness. You are adaptable to changing priorities and enjoy working collaboratively with senior colleagues and stakeholders.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required. However, a strong personal statement demonstrating how you meet the shortlisting criteria and your understanding of HM Treasury’s remit and goals is essential. Experience of working in or with government is beneficial but not mandatory.
