About the Role
Working at HM Treasury places you at the heart of government, influencing decisions that shape the UK economy and impact lives across the country. This role is central to HM Treasury’s work on the global economy, focusing on international comparisons and structural trends such as the emergence of artificial intelligence. You will lead analysis on the UK’s economic performance relative to international peers, providing insights for labour market, growth, and fiscal policy, and shaping the department’s understanding of the global economic outlook.

This fast-paced and dynamic position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of global macroeconomics and domestic policy, engaging with senior officials and Ministers. You will collaborate with policy and analytical teams within HM Treasury, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, and overseas networks to deliver high-quality analysis and advice.

Key responsibilities include leading international labour market analysis to support domestic policy development, driving analysis on AI’s impact on the global economy, supporting international comparisons workstreams, providing headline statistics for internal strategy and public communications, and developing strong international and cross-government partnerships. You will also support the use of data science tools to enhance understanding of global economic developments and risks.

The Global Economics team operates with flexibility and expects members to contribute to wider ad hoc requests such as ministerial visits, correspondence, and corporate responsibilities.

Experience
Knowledge of macroeconomics and economic analysis is essential. Understanding of economic modelling is desirable but not required. Experience in communicating complex economic concepts clearly to non-expert audiences is important. Ability to identify economic developments and risks and to prioritise and deliver timely, quality analysis under evolving deadlines is required.

Qualifications
Undergraduate or master’s degree in economics (for joint degrees, at least 50% of the credit value of course modules should be in economics). Evidence of qualifications will be required if invited to interview.
