About the Role
Working at HM Treasury places you at the heart of government, influencing decisions that shape the UK economy and impact lives across the country. The Treasury offers a fast-paced, dynamic environment with opportunities to advise Ministers on key economic and financial matters, contributing directly to the UK’s prosperity.

As Economic Adviser within the Financial Services Strategy Group, you will lead and shape economic analysis for one of the UK’s most strategically important sectors. This role combines quantitative and qualitative analysis to inform policy, strategy, and Ministerial decision-making, offering exceptional variety from long-term strategic evaluation to responding to urgent Ministerial priorities.

Your responsibilities will include leading the Group's analytical function, developing and delivering the analytical workplan, and identifying emerging priorities. You will build the evidence base supporting the Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy through economic frameworks, policy appraisal, data analysis, sector intelligence, and monitoring and evaluation.

You will lead high-profile analytical projects on Ministerial priorities, presenting findings to Ministers, Special Advisers, and senior officials. Early priorities include AI and regional growth, with scope to influence analysis across the Group’s portfolio.

The role involves close collaboration with policy colleagues, economists across government, regulators, and external stakeholders. You will represent the Group in internal and external forums, bringing economic thinking and evidence into policy development and strengthening the impact of analysis.

The position currently has no direct line management responsibilities but may include overseeing temporary analytical staff for priority projects.

The Financial Services Strategy and Analysis Unit is a friendly, inclusive team that values curiosity and diverse perspectives. Previous financial services policy or sector experience is not required; enthusiasm for applying analysis to shape policy is essential.

Requirements

Experience
Previous financial services policy or sector experience is not required. Demonstrated strong analytical skills and the ability to deliver analytical projects from start to finish are essential.

About you
You will be able to communicate clearly in both written and verbal formats, making technical analysis accessible to non-specialists and policymakers. You should be adept at building effective relationships and influencing stakeholders with diverse priorities. You will demonstrate strong judgment, the ability to respond to a changing policy environment, and situate analysis within a wider strategic context to maximize impact.

Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in Economics or equivalent work experience is required. You must possess or be expected to have a first or upper second-class honours degree with at least 50% of modules in economics, or hold a master’s degree in economics. Evidence of qualifications will be required if invited to interview.
