About the Role
This varied and fast-moving role is at the heart of the Conservative Group, supporting a wide range of councillors and working closely with the Strategic Adviser, Member Support Manager, Conservative Group Officers, and Members across the Group. You will act as the first point of contact for the opposition, supporting them with Conservative Group business and leading on the work programme for the opposition. The role involves interfacing between the political leadership and the Council’s corporate management structure, researching, evaluating, and analysing issues relevant to Group members, and establishing systems to communicate on behalf of the opposition.
This position offers significant exposure to senior elected Members, Council decision-making, and the wider political, financial, and legislative context facing local government. It is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop experience in politics, policy, communications, and local government.
This post is politically restricted and temporary until August 2030. It requires compliance with legislation governing Political Assistant posts.

Experience
Experience in a political environment is valuable and desirable but not essential. Strong candidates may come from a range of backgrounds with a professional approach and a strong interest in public policy and local government.
About You
You will be an outstanding adviser with excellent organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills, confident in managing competing demands from multiple elected Members. You should be able to produce high-quality written material quickly and accurately, including briefing notes, speeches, press statements, social media posts, motions, questions, amendments, or lines to take. You must be comfortable translating complex policy, governance, and political issues into clear advice and practical support for councillors.
Understanding of local government in London, the aims of the Barnet Conservative Group, and the political, financial, and legislative context is essential. Digital and communications skills are important; experience with social media, video editing, graphic design, or other creative communications tools is advantageous, especially to help translate complex messages into clear, engaging content for residents.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required; however, a professional attitude, strong communication skills, and relevant experience or interest in politics and local government are expected.
