About the Role
Self-Service Opening allows eligible library card holders to use libraries during unstaffed hours through technology that extends opening times. This supporting role involves welcoming customers, helping them navigate the library, and assisting with enquiries. Volunteers will help customers log on to public computers and Wi-Fi, provide basic IT support, assist with locating and reserving stock, explain how to join the library, and promote library services and events. Additional duties include shelving returned stock, tidying shelves, refilling paper trays, emptying self-service machines and trolleys, and helping customers use Self-Service kiosks and library equipment. The role requires maintaining an inviting library environment and referring complex enquiries to library staff.

Experience
No prior experience required; enthusiasm and willingness to learn are essential.

An outgoing and friendly personality with the ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, races, cultures, and abilities.
Self-motivated and able to work without direct supervision.
Patient and supportive when assisting people learning new skills.
Calm and composed in difficult situations.
Good IT, literacy, and numeracy skills.
Keen to learn new skills.
Awareness of public library facilities and resources.
Physically able to be on your feet most of the time, including some lifting and shelving stock on low and head-height shelves, bending to empty machines, and pushing trolleys.
Basic understanding of health and safety and awareness of building hazards.
