About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated and proactive Recreation Assistant to help create a safe, clean and welcoming environment for all visitors at our leisure facilities. In this hands-on role, you will support the smooth running of the centre by supervising customers, preparing activity spaces, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, and contributing to the overall safety of staff and users. You will carry out regular building checks, assist with setting up equipment, respond to customer enquiries, and play an important part in ensuring a positive experience for everyone who uses our facilities. This is a varied role where no two days are the same, offering the chance to make a real impact within a busy community-focused service.

About the Team
You will be joining the friendly and committed New River Sport & Fitness team within Haringey’s Environments and Resident Experience directorate. Working closely with managers, operations staff and colleagues across Active Communities, you will be part of a supportive environment that values teamwork, professionalism and great customer service. The centre is home to a wide range of facilities and activities, bringing together residents, sports clubs, partners and community groups — and as a key front-line team member, you will help ensure the centre continues to operate smoothly and safely.

About Haringey
Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture. Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.

Working for Haringey
At Haringey Council we are committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included, and able to be their best at work. We recognise the benefits of a diverse workforce and welcome applications from all ethnicities and communities so that we continue to make a difference to our residents and community. Our benefits package includes a leave entitlement of 31 days plus bank holidays, potential hybrid working opportunities, health and wellbeing support, a generous local government pension scheme and a range of discount schemes across leisure and culture that provide both financial and money-saving discounts.

Requirements

Experience
Previous experience is not essential but a positive attitude and willingness to learn are key. Experience in customer service or leisure environments would be an advantage.

About You
You are energetic, reliable and customer-focused, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will be confident communicating with the public, able to follow health and safety procedures, and happy to take on practical tasks such as cleaning, setting up equipment and supporting users around the centre. You should be comfortable working shifts including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Qualifications
A first aid qualification or coaching certificate would be an advantage but is not essential. More important is your positive attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to providing excellent service to all centre visitors.
