About the Role
The MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) has established a graduate programme to train and develop recent science graduates into skilled laboratory technicians. The 2026 programme offers the opportunity to work within Proteomics and Metabolomics research facilities to develop technical expertise. The programme supports professional development through conventions and workshops.
In Year 1, you will be assigned to a research facility to learn methodologies and facility management. As the year progresses, you will gain experience in other research facilities to broaden your knowledge and practical skills.
In Year 2, you will undertake an independent research project to further develop your technical skills and collaborate across facilities to support LMS science outputs. You will also contribute to developing and implementing methods or improvements that enhance the Institute’s environmental sustainability.
You will report to the Heads of the Graduate Programme and the Head of your hosting facility.
Experience
Previous experience in a laboratory research environment is essential. Knowledge of biology, computing, and standard molecular and cellular laboratory techniques is required. Familiarity with common software tools such as Word and Excel is expected.
About you
You should have a strong interest in medical, health, and experimental research, particularly in the fields related to the hosting facility. Essential personal qualities include the ability to grasp new concepts quickly, follow protocols accurately, respect samples and data, be organised, and work effectively to meet deadlines. Desirable attributes include problem-solving skills, ability to troubleshoot techniques, capability to train and support others, high motivation and commitment, enthusiasm for learning, excellent verbal and written communication skills, teamwork and cooperation, and willingness to work with biological and clinical samples.
Qualifications
A BSc degree in a biological science or related science area (2:1 or above) awarded in 2023 or later, or expected before August 2026, is essential. Degrees in biochemistry, biology, biomedical science, biotechnology, cellular biology, chemistry, computing, engineering, genetics, immunology, mathematics, microbiology, molecular biology, physics, physiology, or related science areas are welcomed.
