About the Role
The Senior Clinical Coder at Blithehale Medical Centre plays a vital role in accurately assigning medical codes to patient diagnoses, treatments, and procedures within a General Practice setting. This position demands strong knowledge of medical coding systems, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to interpret medical documentation effectively. The Clinical Coder ensures compliance with coding standards and regulations while maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of patient records.

Key responsibilities include reviewing all incoming correspondence, filing documents, and entering relevant information into patients’ electronic medical records in accordance with the Coding Protocol and QOF requirements. The role involves highlighting clinician actions and workflows to the appropriate team members, organising patient medical records by linking problem titles, summarising incoming medical records, and recognising knowledge limits by seeking advice when necessary.

Medical coding duties involve assigning appropriate codes to diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and other relevant information based on healthcare professionals’ documentation. The Senior Clinical Coder ensures accurate and consistent coding practices aligned with NHS Classification Service, Local Medical Committees, and other regulatory bodies.

Additional responsibilities include performing regular audits and quality checks on coded data, collaborating with healthcare professionals to resolve coding discrepancies, utilising coding software such as EMIS and Read Codes, and working with IT staff on technical issues related to coding processes. The role also involves staying updated on coding guidelines and providing training to healthcare professionals and staff to improve documentation and coding accuracy.

Confidentiality is paramount, with strict adherence to policies protecting patient, staff, and practice information. The post-holder will also support health and safety policies, promote equality and diversity, and participate in personal and professional development activities including annual performance reviews.

The Senior Clinical Coder contributes to maintaining quality within the practice by identifying risks, assessing performance, and participating in quality improvement programs such as EQUIP. Effective communication with team members, patients, and carers is essential, including adapting to alternative communication needs.

Experience
Proven experience in clinical coding within a General Practice or healthcare setting is essential. Strong knowledge of medical coding systems such as Read Codes and experience using clinical systems like EMIS is required. Experience in performing audits and quality assurance of coded data is highly desirable.
