About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist to take full ownership of the monthly payroll for 330+ employees. You will be responsible for ensuring employees are paid accurately, on time, and in full compliance with UK payroll legislation.
As the business continues to grow, the workforce is expected to reach approximately 700 employees, making this a key role within the Finance team. You will work closely with HR, Finance, department heads, and employees to ensure payroll information is accurate, complete, and processed efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Process the full end-to-end monthly payroll cycle for 330+ employees accurately and on time, supporting future growth to approximately 700 employees.
- Coordinate with departments and team heads to ensure payroll data is accurate and complete.
- Ensure payroll activity complies with UK legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, employee benefits, statutory payments, and pension auto-enrolment obligations.
- Prepare and submit pension contribution summaries to relevant pension providers.
- Prepare and post monthly payroll journals, ensuring payroll costs are accurately reflected in the accounts.
- Submit payroll data to HMRC accurately and on time via RTI.
- Maintain accurate employee payroll records, including joiners, leavers, and monthly contractual changes.
- Manage and resolve employee payroll queries in a timely and professional manner.
- Handle sensitive payroll information with discretion and in compliance with data protection regulations.
- Support the Senior Accountant with month-end close processes, payroll reconciliations, and related reporting.
- Assist with ad hoc finance and payroll-related tasks as required.
- Work closely with HR as the key link between HR and Finance to ensure payroll information is accurate, complete, and provided on time.
Experience
- Proven end-to-end payroll processing experience within a UK-based role.
- Strong working knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, statutory leave payments, auto-enrolment, and RTI submissions.
- Experience managing payslips, employee benefits, and pension administration.
- Experience working with commission-based payroll.
- Experience using PayEscape, Phase 3, or similar cloud-based payroll software.
- Advanced Excel skills, including confidence working with large datasets.
About You
You are highly accurate and detail-oriented, understanding the direct impact payroll has on employees. You have strong communication skills and can respond to payroll queries clearly and professionally.
You are organised and self-managing, able to manage competing deadlines and keep payroll running smoothly without close supervision. You demonstrate discretion and integrity when handling confidential employee information and have a strong problem-solving mindset, with the ability to investigate discrepancies and resolve issues quickly.
You are collaborative, team-oriented, and comfortable working closely with HR, Finance, and wider business teams.
