About the Role
This role within the Immunisations Vaccine Preventable Disease Division focuses on enhancing surveillance systems, programme monitoring and evaluation, epidemiological assessment, and research studies of viral respiratory diseases. You will lead and support data collection, validation, and production of routine surveillance intelligence.
You will analyse and interpret surveillance data, develop automated routines and solutions, and manage complex or sensitive data requests. Applying expertise in epidemiology, database management, analysis, statistics, and information/data science approaches, you will contribute to public health scientific analyses, reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
The role includes supporting outbreak and incident responses, designing and interpreting analytical studies, and managing team members. You will contribute to the professional development of colleagues and liaise with internal and external stakeholders across UKHSA, NHS, government, and academic partners.
Key responsibilities include developing and managing infectious disease surveillance systems, leading epidemiological investigations of vaccine impact and effectiveness, supporting vaccine programme introduction and evaluation, conducting complex statistical analyses, and producing scientific reports and publications.
You will also support outbreak investigations, ensure compliance with research ethics and data governance, contribute to teaching and training activities, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of epidemiology and surveillance methods. The role requires effective time management, leadership, and building strong working relationships across multiple organisations.
Experience
- Extensive experience interpreting, evaluating, and analysing epidemiological data
- Extensive experience writing code, ideally in R, with knowledge of R Markdown and SQL
- Experience managing research studies and databases
- Proven ability to write scientific papers and reports
- Understanding of epidemiological surveillance and information governance
- Experience supporting outbreak investigations and public health responses
- Effective relationship-building with colleagues and stakeholders

Qualifications
- First degree in a STEM or social science subject
- Masters or PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, or allied area
- Postgraduate work or equivalent experience in public health, epidemiology, or allied area
- Knowledge of infectious disease surveillance and UK health and social care environment is desirable
- Understanding of respiratory virus epidemiology and experience presenting to varied audiences is desirable
- Experience of line management is desirable
