About the Role
Use your housing and litigation expertise to make a real difference across a varied and high-profile local government caseload. As our Housing and General Litigation Solicitor, you will provide clear, practical legal advice on a broad range of housing and local government litigation matters. You will help the Council make lawful, fair and robust decisions that stand up to scrutiny and support effective services for residents.
This is a hands-on, fast-paced role with a varied housing and general litigation caseload. You will advise on tenancy management, possession, anti-social behaviour, injunctions, disrepair, leasehold matters, homelessness appeals, allocations, judicial reviews, policy issues and other civil, commercial and regulatory litigation matters.
You will manage your own caseload, draft and defend proceedings, prepare advice and legal documents, and work closely with officers across the Council to find practical, legally sound solutions. Your work may include advising on housing policy and strategy, preparing judicial review responses, supporting decision-making and appearing as an advocate where appropriate.
You will handle complex, high-profile and politically sensitive matters with confidence, ensuring deadlines are met, procedures are followed and records are kept up to date. You will also keep pace with changes in housing and public law, helping client departments understand what those changes mean in practice.
This is an opportunity to use your legal expertise where it really counts — supporting lawful decision-making, protecting vital services and helping the Council respond effectively to a wide range of housing and litigation challenges.
Interviews will take place in person on the week commencing 7th September 2026 and will involve a Q&A interview and a Case Study on the day.
You will be part of a friendly, experienced bi-borough litigation team of 15 lawyers, where support, collaboration and professional growth go hand in hand. The Council offers access to training, mentoring and opportunities to lead on major projects. It is a busy environment with real challenges and purpose, valuing high standards, mutual respect and integrity. Your work will help the Council make fair, lawful and timely decisions on issues that directly impact residents’ lives.
Kensington and Chelsea is home to diverse communities, thriving businesses and unique local places. The Council is committed to delivering services with care and competence, listening to residents, acting with integrity and working together to build a greener, safer and fairer borough for all. This role exemplifies the Council’s commitment to being ‘all in’ — bringing your expertise and drive to work that matters.
Experience
You must be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEx entitled to practise in England and Wales. You will bring strong knowledge of housing and general litigation, including experience of possession, anti-social behaviour, disrepair, homelessness appeals, judicial review and wider local government litigation.
About you
You will have the confidence to advise on sensitive and urgent matters, exercise sound judgement and work constructively with senior officers, Members and service colleagues. You will be able to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical advice that supports robust decision-making.
Strong drafting, advocacy, negotiation and communication skills are essential. You will be organised, resilient and able to manage a varied caseload independently, while working collaboratively as part of a supportive legal team.
We are looking for someone who combines attention to detail with a practical approach, balancing legal precision with an understanding of the Council’s wider priorities.
