About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, adaptable and highly motivated Specialist Technical Instructor to provide expert technical instruction, demonstration and support in mould making, sculpting, casting and composites at the Royal College of Art. The role focuses on art fabrication and product development with a forward-thinking approach to materials as part of the Future Materials Workshops.
You will serve as an expert instructor in moulding, casting and art production, supporting students, staff, research projects and interworkshop collaboration. You will also assist the Lead Technical Instructor in the operational management and ongoing development of the area.
The Casting and Composites workshop consists of three distinct areas: Mould Making, Casting and Materials (MCM) for gypsum-based media, silicones and alginate; the Silicones and Composites room, a clean space for sensitive materials and mould preparation; and an Extracted Workshop for hazardous composites and casting materials such as epoxy, polyurethane resins and pre-preg carbon fibre processes.
As a Specialist Technical Instructor, you will provide hands-on technical support and advice on a wide range of materials including silicones, rubbers, resins, foams, jesmonite, gypsum, cementitious materials, laminates and pre-preg composites. You will plan and deliver demonstrations, advise students, researchers and staff, and help solve creative and technical challenges.
Additional responsibilities include assisting with workshop maintenance and development, running and installing equipment, creating learning resources, ensuring health and safety standards, supporting research and innovation by identifying new technologies and processes, contributing to teaching and learning projects, and assisting with exhibitions and events.

Experience
- Strong background and technical expertise in prosthetics, sculpting, mould making, casting, silicones, resins and composite materials.
- Experience providing skilled technical assistance, guidance, demonstration and instruction across a wide variety of making processes.
- Proven ability to support complex and varied project development in a fast-paced environment.
