About the Role
Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking. We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way. As a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company, we are fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. Our technologists are at the heart of Starling, working in a fast-paced environment focused on building innovative fintech solutions. We operate a flat structure empowering you to make decisions and collaborate across teams, with support always available in our open culture.

As an Android Engineer, you will work within cross-functional feature teams to develop and improve our Android app, CI automations, and tooling. You will be empowered to make platform decisions and provide insights to team leads. From your first week, you will be committing, reviewing, and shipping new code. Our platform is built mostly in Java, with the Android app primarily written in Kotlin, using MVVM architecture, RxJava for asynchronous operations, Dagger for dependency injection, and Realm for persistence.

We value delivering stable, resilient, and high-quality code, with a strong focus on testing using Espresso for UI/E2E tests and JUnit for unit tests. You will work closely with QA engineers to ensure comprehensive testing coverage. We release app updates at least once a week, with a rotating release manager role and automated internal tooling to standardize release steps.

Our team regularly meets to discuss improvements and attends conferences and meet-ups together. We embrace innovation, collaboration, and ownership to deliver the best possible results for our customers.

Requirements

Experience
Experience working as an Android engineer, ideally with Kotlin and Java. Familiarity with MVVM architecture, RxJava, Dagger, and Realm is highly desirable. Proven ability to write clean, maintainable code with a strong focus on testing and security. Experience working in cross-functional teams and contributing to CI/CD pipelines is a plus.

About you
Self-driven and able to take full ownership of your work from building and shipping code to sharing knowledge and improving processes. Collaborative with a strong focus on delivering high-quality, secure, and accessible features. Passionate about creating great user experiences and working closely with designers and other engineers. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, innovative environment with a flat structure and open culture.

Qualifications
No specific formal qualifications are required, but a strong technical background in Android development and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement are essential.

Additional Information
You will report to a mobile lead engineer and receive regular support. The interview process includes an initial chat with the Talent Team, an interview with an engineer, a take-home technical test, live coding, a technical interview, and a final interview. We encourage a two-way conversation to ensure a good fit for both you and Starling.
