About the Role
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering key economic, social and demographic topics. We are transforming how we use data to better understand and measure the UK’s economy and society, driving better decision making and improving citizens’ lives. A core part of this transformation is the development of our Geospatial Strategy and capability, enhancing the use of geospatial methods across the organisation.
As a Census Geospatial Analyst, you will apply your expertise in geography and spatial/location data to deliver high-quality analysis and geographical products. You will lead and support research and analytical projects where location data is central, while exploring innovative technologies to improve efficiency and outputs.
Your work will span a broad range of geospatial projects—from creating new geographies to processing spatial datasets to generate insights and indicators. You will help advance geospatial analytical methods by introducing new approaches to data processing and interpretation. Collaboration with colleagues and guidance from senior team members will be key, alongside continuous professional development to stay current with emerging geospatial technologies and techniques.
Key responsibilities include working independently or with team support on projects, using GIS, coding, analytical and statistical methodologies, preparing datasets, reviewing new data sources, quality assessing outputs, collaborating with academic and commercial experts, supporting training material production, and engaging with the geography community across ONS and government.
Experience
At least 1 year of relevant experience or an undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) related to geospatial analysis or a closely related field. Demonstrated ability to apply geographic knowledge, geospatial analysis, problem solving, and quality assurance in a professional environment.

Qualifications
At least an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification relevant to the role, or equivalent experience demonstrating the required skills and knowledge.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in geospatial software and systems for managing, analysing and displaying geospatial data.
- Experience with geospatial coding, including the use of coding libraries for analysis and automation of geospatial processes.
- Knowledge of geographic compliance, including legal and ethical issues related to geospatial data.
- Ability to conduct data preparation and linkage, including cleansing, modelling, transforming and assuring data quality.
- Strong quality assurance and control skills to ensure precision and accuracy of datasets and outputs.
