About the Role
This role provides scientific support to the Respiratory and Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Reference Unit (RVPBRU) at UKHSA, Colindale. You will maintain and develop laboratory data management systems, including the laboratory information management system (MOLIS), and contribute to national surveillance and research activities. The role involves supporting bioinformaticians with bacterial genomic sequencing data analysis and pathogen-specific web-based databases for sequence typing. You will carry out scientific data analysis and interpretation, contribute to new projects, and disseminate findings through presentations and peer-reviewed publications. The role requires liaison with UKHSA staff at all levels and support for outbreak investigations by providing relevant information to medical and scientific teams across UKHSA, NHS, and other bodies. You will ensure compliance with data confidentiality, security policies, and quality standards, including laboratory accreditation and quality assurance programmes. The role also involves contributing to training colleagues and pursuing continuous professional development. Experience
- Experience of data management
- Experience of data and statistical analysis using tools such as Excel, STATA, or R
- Experience using database software packages such as Access or SQL
- Coding experience in SQL, R, or Python

Qualifications
- Primary degree in a science or health-related subject (e.g. biomedical science, healthcare science, epidemiology)
- Desirable: bioinformatics experience using commercial or unix command line software
- Desirable: experience with MOLIS or similar laboratory management systems
