About the Role
We are seeking a Data Manager to join the Bioinformatics team within the Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infections (AMR & HCAI) Division. This role supports the management of epidemiological and pathogen genomics data across multiple surveillance areas including Surgical Site Infection Surveillance, Streptococcal Infection, Antimicrobial Resistance and Prescribing, Mandatory Surveillance of Bloodstream Infections, and Infections in Critical Care Units.

The Data Manager will lead the development and management of laboratory information systems such as LIMS, MOLIS, WHONet, workload analysis, and business intelligence tools. You will provide data outputs from various sources, assist with service development using IT and informatics skills, and facilitate automation and computer-assisted work processes.

Key responsibilities include integrating pathogen whole genome sequencing data into laboratory service delivery and surveillance, advising laboratory management on information system development, representing laboratories on genomics and IT committees, supporting data handling and analysis, producing and presenting data reports, training staff on database and software use, and ensuring compliance with UKHSA Data Protection and Caldicott regulations.

This role requires collaboration with the Quality Team to maintain high standards, contribute to audits, and suggest quality improvements. You will also contribute to IT system development, liaise with IT colleagues, maintain relevant websites, and undertake risk assessments.

The position is based at the Colindale campus with hybrid working options and requires a minimum Counter Terrorism Check security clearance. UKHSA is investing in a new National Biosecurity Centre in Harlow, Essex, with phased relocation planned for the mid-2030s onwards.

Experience
- MSc including modules on database design, implementation, and usage (e.g., Life Sciences, Computer Science) or equivalent experience in database management
- Expertise in designing, building, and querying databases (MS Access plus at least one major RDBMS such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle)
- Experience identifying IT requirements for business functions
- Excellent IT skills and ability to communicate effectively with all staff levels
- Ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team

Qualifications
- MSc or equivalent qualification in a relevant field with database focus
- Desirable: experience in bioinformatics and biostatistics
