About the Role
The Virus Reference Department (VRD) is a national and international reference centre for a wide range of virus infections. The Antiviral Unit (AVU), within VRD, provides specialist diagnostic services and advice on HIV, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), and Herpes Simplex virus types 1 & 2. The unit also undertakes research and development projects focused on correlating genotypic markers with phenotypic resistance profiles and continuously improving diagnostic methods. The unit collaborates closely with epidemiology colleagues and academic partners to deliver national public health surveillance programmes for HIV and HCV.

The key objectives of this role are to support the antiviral resistance testing services for HCV, HIV, and HSV, and to contribute to the unit's research and development projects.

Responsibilities include performing molecular and viral culture diagnostic tests for genotypic and phenotypic antiviral resistance, compiling and updating technical documentation, supporting assay validation, maintaining UKAS accreditation standards, and contributing to project work. The role involves working to high-quality standards, maintaining accurate records, and engaging in continuous professional development through training and appraisal.

The unit's test repertoire includes the UK’s first fully validated and accredited viral whole genome sequencing assay for HCV, Sanger sequencing for HIV and HSV antiviral targets, and phenotypic characterisation of HSV isolates. The unit is upgrading assays by PCR multiplexing and moving towards next-generation sequencing (NGS), aiming to enhance speed and throughput without compromising accuracy or cost.

This role primarily supports Healthcare Scientists in routine diagnostic service delivery, including LIMS management, quality management, sample handling, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, sequencing, and viral tissue culture. Training will be provided where necessary, though prior experience with these techniques is advantageous. The role also supports R&D activities, with some familiarity with NGS being beneficial.

The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team comprising Principal Clinical and Data Scientists, senior Healthcare Scientists, a Technical Manager, and Healthcare Scientists at HEO level.

Experience
- Experience working in a microbiological diagnostic laboratory or equivalent.
- Experience with quality assurance and safety principles and procedures.
- Computer literate, including proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word).
- Ability to analyse and evaluate data based on evidence.
- Ability to create reports and present findings effectively.
- High level of motivation and commitment to maintaining high standards.

Qualifications
- BSc in biological sciences or equivalent (e.g., microbiology) is essential.
- Desirable: CPD registration and certification and/or HCPC registration.
- Desirable: Experience with PCR, sequencing, and/or viral culture.
- Desirable: Experience working in a regulated environment (e.g., ISO 15189).
