About the Role
The post is based in the Public Health Programmes Directorate within the Immunisation & Vaccine Preventable Diseases (IVPD) Division. The IVPD Division leads national surveillance of vaccine preventable infections and provides technical support and clinical expertise to the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS in planning and delivering national immunisation programmes. These programmes deliver millions of vaccines annually across the life course in various NHS settings. The division also supports the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation and contributes to the publication of “Immunisation Against Infectious Disease.”

The role involves developing, managing, and maintaining surveillance databases and systems for acute vaccine preventable diseases, conducting complex statistical analyses, and supervising junior scientific and administrative staff. You will manage outbreak investigations, including data collection, analysis, and reporting, and contribute to research projects and scientific publications.

Additional responsibilities include presenting epidemiological findings at national and international meetings, developing and delivering training materials, and supporting professional development activities. The post holder will contribute to enhanced surveillance systems and research studies of respiratory diseases, lead data collection and validation, and produce routine surveillance intelligence using advanced analytical, statistical, database, mapping, and web tools.

The role requires collaboration across directorate teams, local Health Protection Teams, and external partners to investigate infectious disease outbreaks and support public health scientific analyses and reporting.

Experience
- Advanced skills in interpreting and evaluating epidemiological data using SQL databases, spreadsheets, and statistical packages such as R.
- Experience managing epidemiological studies, outbreak investigations, and statistical analysis of large, complex datasets.
- Ability to work independently, take responsibility for technical work and time management, and contribute effectively as a team member.
- Experience supervising scientific and administrative staff and producing surveillance reports and publications.
- Experience presenting scientific papers at national and international conferences is desirable.
- Experience creating and delivering presentations to diverse internal and external stakeholders and liaising with health professionals and scientific specialists is desirable.

Qualifications
- Higher degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or an allied subject.
- Postgraduate work or study in public health, epidemiology, or an allied subject.
- Understanding of recent advances in epidemiology and microbiology of vaccine preventable diseases is desirable.
