About the Role
The Analysis Group is central to the Department for Business and Trade, providing data, evidence and insight that underpin key decisions on trade, investment and growth. Supporting Ministers, senior leaders and policy teams, the group delivers high-impact analysis on critical economic and strategic issues facing the UK.

The Economy and Strategic Analysis (ESA) Team plays a pivotal role within the Analysis Group, leading work on economic growth, the Industrial Strategy, macroeconomic analysis, and futures & foresight. The Deputy Director will lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 25 analysts, including economists and social researchers, and directly line manage four Grade 6 analysts who head distinct sub-teams:

- Head of Economy, Growth & Productivity Analysis: Leading analysis on UK macroeconomic trends, economic growth, productivity, business microdata, and inequality.
- Head of Industrial Policy Analysis: Leading sector and technology-focused Industrial Strategy analysis, monitoring & evaluation, and supporting Growth Policy.
- Head of Futures & Foresight Analysis: Applying futures and foresight tools to support economic growth and productivity analysis and build internal capability.
- Head of Economic Policy Analysis: Leading cross-cutting Industrial Strategy analysis on skills, procurement, place, and building the industrial policy evidence base.

The role involves supporting the Director of Analysis on urgent and cross-cutting priorities, deputising on the Departmental Directors of Analysis Network, providing secretariat for the Analysts for Growth Group, leading corporate initiatives, collaborating with government analytical teams, and representing DBT externally at conferences and events.

Requirements

Experience
- Proven leadership and management of large, expert analytical teams, maintaining morale and delivery during challenging periods.
- Track record of building and leading proactive research programmes that influence senior decision-makers and deliver outcomes in economic growth policy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to convey technical material to both expert and non-expert audiences.
- Strong relationship-building and stakeholder management skills within and outside Government.
- Expertise and curiosity in economic growth analysis, with a commitment to continuous capability development and innovation.

Qualifications
- Badged member of the Government Economic Service (GES) analytical profession or willing to be successfully badged as part of the recruitment process.
- A first or upper second-class honours degree in economics (or international equivalent), or a postgraduate degree in economics, with at least 50% of course modules in economics if a joint degree.
- Studied both macroeconomics and microeconomics.
