About the Role
The Department for Business and Trade's north star is economic growth. It supports businesses to invest, export and grow - creating high quality jobs and opportunities across the country. The Department has three core roles: creating a dynamic and resilient domestic business environment by protecting consumers, promoting competition, effective regulation, supporting priority industry sectors and fostering scale ups; ensuring the UK is the best internationally connected economy by negotiating free trade agreements, tackling market barriers and protecting businesses from unfair trade practices; and delivering great services to business through entities such as the British Business Bank, Office for Investment, and Companies House.
The Permanent Secretary is the lead adviser to the Secretary of State, providing support, counsel and challenge in setting strategy and developing policy. Key responsibilities include providing strong leadership by translating ministers’ priorities into a clear delivery plan, ensuring the Department has the skills and capacity needed and fostering a high performance culture; managing, motivating and engaging staff to develop their capability and exemplify the Department’s ambition and values; acting as the Accounting Officer responsible to Parliament for managing the Department’s £3.6 billion budget, ensuring effective financial systems and efficient resource use; and being a dynamic, confident and visible leader who represents the Department and champions relationships with senior business leaders across the UK and internationally.
