About the Role
Our world-leading Time & Frequency department is seeking an experienced and practicing Senior Software Engineer with proven expertise in DevOps automation and container orchestration. You will join the team at an exciting time as we maintain the UK’s National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and develop a new resilient Time Scale facility to underpin Critical National Infrastructure. This facility addresses risks associated with dependency on global navigation satellite systems vulnerable to natural and intentional interference.
You will work closely with Product Managers and Delivery Managers to align product and business requirements, develop proposals, and balance technical debt to deliver product functionality.

Key responsibilities:
- Oversee software release management including automated deployment to multiple on-premises and cloud environments
- Develop scripts to automate DevOps functions
- Manage all content going live

Requirements

Experience
- Proven and recent experience delivering DevOps solutions
- Team leadership
- Risk assessment and management
- Security mindset
- Clear communication skills

Essential Technical Skills
- Automation tools such as Packer, Terraform, Ansible
- CI/CD practices and pipeline development
- Unix system administration
- Cloud platform administration
- Docker and container orchestration
- Python and shell scripting
- Professional software development experience

Desirable
- Interest in physics, measurements, and communications
- Experience or knowledge of time and frequency measurement and time scale steering
- Real-time monitoring and control of electronic hardware
- Satellite communication, optical fibre, and GNSS-based systems

About You
You will report to a Programme Manager and play a pivotal role in designing critical UK infrastructure that pushes the boundaries of measurement accuracy for the UK’s new resilient Time Scale. You must be able to obtain SC security clearance with no restrictions or already hold such clearance.

Qualifications
Relevant professional experience and technical skills are essential. Security clearance requirements apply due to the nature of the work.
