About the Role
Join the world-leading Time & Frequency department at the National Physical Laboratory during an exciting period of development. You will contribute to maintaining the UK’s National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and help develop a new resilient Time Scale facility that supports Critical National Infrastructure. This facility addresses risks linked to global navigation satellite systems such as GPS, which are vulnerable to natural and intentional interference.
You will collaborate with prominent Scientists, Engineers, and Cyber Security Specialists to design and implement robust, scalable, and secure network infrastructure that meets time, quality, and cost requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and architecting comprehensive network solutions tailored to scientific and engineering needs
- Overseeing specification, selection, and procurement of networking equipment ensuring compatibility with scientific instruments
- Configuring and deploying routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices per project requirements
- Maintaining security hygiene by applying best practices in collaboration with security specialists
- Executing integration tests, documenting and analysing results to identify vulnerabilities and improvements
- Providing expert troubleshooting to minimise downtime and optimise performance of scientific and IT infrastructure
- Collaborating with scientific, engineering, and IT leadership to align technology solutions with research objectives
- Mentoring junior staff and leading by example in technical excellence
- Maintaining meticulous records to support quality assurance processes
- Engaging with diverse stakeholders to ensure networking requirements are met and understood
Experience
- Hands-on experience installing, testing, and integrating network equipment
- Experience with IT and network infrastructure including servers, switches, firewalls, WAN, LAN, routers, proxy servers, and their management software
- Knowledge of IT security tooling setup and applying policy-based processes
- Design and commissioning of systems aligned with standards and certifications
- Cyber security hygiene practices and relevant technologies
- Experience with network monitoring software and tools
- Familiarity with cloud-native products, virtualisation, containerisation, and database technologies installation and management
About you
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts
- Collaborative mindset with ability to work closely with scientists, engineers, and IT leadership
- Leadership qualities including mentoring junior staff and maintaining technical excellence
- Interest in physics, measurements, and communications is desirable, including:
- Time and frequency measurement and time scale steering
- Real-time monitoring and control of electronic hardware
- Satellite communication, optical fibre, and GNSS-based systems
- Experience with Microsoft Azure DevOps and Agile working practices is highly desirable
Qualifications
- Relevant academic and professional qualifications or equivalent hands-on experience
- Ability to obtain SC security clearance with no restrictions is required to work in the Time & Frequency department
- BPSS security clearance is required to work at NPL
