About the Role
The Emergency Department Assistant (EDA) will deliver high-quality care and evidence-based interventions, demonstrating a commitment to safe practice and a positive patient experience. The post holder will provide a wide range of practical clinical duties and take appropriate action to ensure optimal safety and quality of care for patients within the department, working without direct supervision. Accountable for the standards of delegated duties, the EDA will continue to develop skills, knowledge, and competencies through ongoing training and experience.
As a vital member of the Emergency Department team, reporting to the Lead Nurse for ED, the post holder will support registered nurses by participating in patient care delivery. The role requires self-motivation, initiative, and the ability to work under supervision while maintaining professional standards.
The EDA will have demonstrable experience in caring for patients with mental health and/or physical complaints, observing changes in health or behaviour, participating in risk assessments and care planning, and maintaining accurate records of care provided.
Key responsibilities include treating all patients with dignity, respect, and discretion while maintaining confidentiality, assisting with personal hygiene needs such as washing, bed bathing, showering, mouth care, and denture cleaning, and ensuring clinical areas remain clean and clutter-free.
The post holder will be competent in venepuncture, cannulation, and performing ECGs on patients. In-house training for EDAs/HCAs will be provided and maintained to ensure agreed levels of competence.
Good communication skills and adherence to Trust guidelines and policies are essential.

Experience
Demonstrable experience in direct patient care, including mental health and physical health complaints. Experience in venepuncture, cannulation, and ECG is required or willingness to develop these skills through training.

Qualifications
Relevant healthcare assistant or emergency department assistant training preferred. Willingness to complete hospital in-house training for EDAs/HCAs and maintain agreed competence levels.
