About the Role
As a Speech and Language Therapist at Whittington Hospital NHS Trust, you will demonstrate clinical expertise in the assessment, treatment, and management of language and communication problems in school-aged children up to 11 years. You will provide specialist assessment and intervention, monitor outcomes, and apply evidence-based practice to make appropriate differential diagnoses and clinical decisions for complex cases. Your role includes developing clear care plans, supporting curriculum differentiation, and creating communication-friendly schemes of work. You will collaborate with Early Years Services and Camden Service for Young People to support smooth transitions for children. Providing advice on managing children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is essential. You will work closely with children, carers, families, and school staff to agree on management plans, employing excellent communication and counselling skills. Managing challenging behaviours with appropriate strategies, monitoring progress, and modifying targets as needed are key responsibilities. You will reflect on clinical practice individually and with peers, incorporating current educational policies such as the local offer. Managing and prioritising a specialist caseload under supervision, contributing to multi-agency assessments including Education, Health and Social Care Plans, and ensuring appropriate referrals to other services are part of your duties. You will also contribute to clinical governance, risk management, quality standards, and clinical effectiveness initiatives. Accountability for professional actions and adherence to departmental, national protocols, and professional codes of conduct is required.

Liaison and Teamwork
You will contribute to multidisciplinary and unidisciplinary clinical teams, ensuring coordinated care plans. Liaising and sharing information with health, education, and other professionals while observing data protection guidelines is essential. Participation in meetings, co-production meetings, annual reviews, case conferences, and multi-agency team meetings will support inter-agency collaboration and policy development. You may be required to undertake other duties as directed by the Head of Speech and Language Therapy, including potential workplace changes.

Administration
Responsibilities include accurate and timely activity data collection and updating within Trust guidelines. You will ensure the security, care, and maintenance of equipment, maintaining infection control and safety standards, including equipment loaned to clients.

Personal and Professional Development
You will participate in annual appraisals aligned with service and organisational plans. Attendance at specialist short courses and advanced training is expected to maintain and develop skills and knowledge relevant to this specialist role. Maintaining up-to-date HCPC and RCSLT registration is required. Contribution to team meetings and participation in in-service training will support ongoing professional growth.

Experience
Proven clinical expertise in assessing and managing language and communication difficulties in school-aged children. Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to multi-agency assessments. Ability to manage challenging behaviours and apply appropriate intervention strategies. Experience in clinical governance and quality standards is desirable.

Qualifications
Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Speech and Language Therapist. Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) is required. Relevant specialist training and ongoing professional development in paediatric speech and language therapy.
