About the Role
Southwark Council is embarking on a number of ambitious regeneration projects including Old Kent Road, Aylesbury, Elephant & Castle and Canada Water. You can be a part of this unique challenge. The Highway Development Team contributes to the overall Highway Authority’s response to planning enquiries and applications, ensuring suitable arrangements are in place to mitigate adverse effects and maximise street scene improvements. The team manages highway projects from developers and others, ensuring compliance with the council’s highway design standards through a rigorous design review process to deliver a high quality public realm.

In this role, you will design and deliver highways infrastructure services and projects to agreed timescales and budgets. You will oversee contractors to ensure high standards, regulatory compliance, and adherence to health and safety requirements. Additionally, you will manage a programme of maintenance throughout the year, conduct surveys and site inspections, and apply your knowledge of the latest engineering developments.

Experience
- HNC or NHD in Engineering, a recognised degree in a relevant discipline, and professional membership of an engineering institution.
- Experience overseeing responsive maintenance plans and delivering projects compliant with Construction Design and Management 2015 regulations.
- Experience in the design of engineering works including identification of technical options.
- Knowledge of current street scene and transport infrastructure issues in the UK and London, and understanding of their impact on the Council.
- Evidence of continuous professional development and outstanding knowledge of relevant regulations and standards including NRWSA, HAUC, and Health and Safety.
- Good IT skills including intermediate level proficiency in bespoke design and engineering software.
- Ability to develop and mentor junior staff.
- Strong verbal, written, and numerical skills.
