Richmond, with a combination of onsite and home working. Applicants should be able to regularly travel to the Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their work time.

About the Role
The National Archives (TNA) operates within a complex and sophisticated policy environment. As Head of Data and Information Policy, you will be the chief adviser to the Keeper of Public Records and The National Archives’ Board on all aspects of data and information policy relating to the organisation’s operations and strategic implementation.
This senior leadership role involves managing and nurturing relationships with key strategic stakeholders on behalf of the Chief Executive and supporting the Deputy Chief Executive in influencing legislative and data policy across government to protect and advance the interests of The National Archives and the wider archive sector.
You will lead the delivery of TNA’s ministerially-endorsed strategic ambition to develop proposals for legislative change to the Public Records Act 1958 and the wider regime for access to the historical public record, unlocking the value of archival holdings in the digital age.
As a senior member of the Government and Archives Leadership Directorate and the wider Senior Leadership Team, you will contribute to driving the Directorate’s business and hold collective accountability for organisational culture and successful delivery of The National Archives’ strategy.
This role requires Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance and the ability to provide a comprehensive record of residence, employment, education, and travel history for the previous 10 years.
Experience
- Sophisticated understanding of the interfaces between at least two of the following legal areas and their impact on access to data and information: the Public Records Act 1958, the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Re-Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2015, GDPR and associated Data Protection legislation.
- Proven track record as a credible and trusted policy adviser to a Chief Executive and/or Board-level equivalents.
- Demonstrable ability to collaborate with legal professionals to protect and promote organisational rights and responsibilities.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills, with experience in translating complex and specialised policy concepts for non-specialist audiences in both oral and written formats.
- Proactive relationship builder with senior stakeholders and expert networks across policy, legal, governmental, archive sector, data professional, and political domains, both domestically and internationally.
- Deep strategic thinker with sound judgement, political awareness, and commercial acumen.
- Aptitude for governance including sound budget management and effective communication of progress, issues, opportunities, and risks to the Executive Team, Board, and ministers where appropriate.
