About the Role
Historic England is the public organisation dedicated to bringing new life to heritage to build a better future for every place and everyone. We have an exciting opportunity for a Historic Environment Planning Adviser to join our regional Development Advice team. This role involves supporting local communities and local authority partners in appreciating the significance of their historic environment and promoting its sustainable management through the planning system at both strategic and local levels.

As part of the team, you will take delegated responsibility for providing Historic England's advice to local authorities and partners in the preparation and revision of development plans. You will apply the ethos of 'constructive conservation' and effectively use Historic England's guidance in all advisory work. Your responsibilities will include advising on strategic planning matters such as Spatial Development Strategies, Local Plans, and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, as well as contributing to national and local guidance.

This is a fixed term contract until March 2027 with possible scope to extend beyond this date. Requirements

Experience
Educated to degree level or equivalent in town planning or a closely related subject, or significant experience in a relevant field.
A thorough understanding of the national planning system and its legislative context at both strategic and local levels, and its role in the sustainable management of the historic environment.
Proven track record in managing positive change to places.
Good negotiating and influencing skills.
Experience working constructively with Local Authorities, organisations, developers and owners.

Qualifications
Degree or equivalent qualification in town planning or a closely related discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience in the field.
