About the Role
This is a wonderful opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who enjoys working with a wide range of students aged 11-18 years old. Our newly refurbished library is modern and provides students with a peaceful environment to quietly read, learn, and carry out their own research to reach academic goals. As a Librarian, you will promote a love of reading amongst students and staff and ensure the library book borrowing system is managed efficiently. You will provide high quality resources to support the learning process and have the opportunity to share expertise across a growing group of Academies and independent schools within United Learning.

We value outstanding librarians who are confident and effective in all aspects of their role. We provide support and challenge to help you grow and be the best you can be. You will embrace the Academy’s ethos of “the best in everyone” and enjoy working with a rich, diverse group of young people in a dynamic and vibrant learning environment. Walthamstow Academy is sponsored by United Learning, offering outstanding professional development and career progression across both the maintained and independent sectors.

Main responsibilities include:
- Creating and maintaining an inspiring, purposeful, orderly, and productive working environment in the library
- Developing and managing library operations, systems, and procedures in line with agreed policies
- Acquiring, organising, and managing all library books and materials
- Delivering literacy and reading interventions to small groups of targeted students
- Liaising with teaching staff to provide books and resources relevant to the curriculum and supporting teachers in their delivery
- Promoting awareness of library services and encouraging maximum use of books and resources as a centre for reading and learning

Working for us
Walthamstow Academy opened its impressive new building in 2006 and has since achieved excellent GCSE and A Level results. In 2024, students achieved a Progress 8 score of 0.49, with many progressing to Russell Group institutions. The school is full and oversubscribed on first choices alone.

We believe in the best in everyone, maintaining high expectations and quickly identifying barriers to success to provide necessary support. The Academy celebrates its multicultural character with 90% of students from minority ethnic groups and a diverse community background. Many students enter with low literacy and attainment levels, and staff work hard to add value to their performance. Standards are above national averages in most subjects.

The Academy is conveniently located near the North Circular Road, M11, and both Blackhorse Road and Walthamstow Central underground stations, with easy access to central London and surrounding green spaces.

Walthamstow Academy has achieved the CPLD Gold Award for professional development investment, recognising the importance of staff in achieving success. We welcome your interest in joining our community.
