About the Role
The Department of Ageing and Health is seeking to recruit one fixed-term locum consultant to join the enthusiastic and internationally regarded Perioperative Medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) team. This vacancy has arisen due to maternity leave, with potential for further opportunities as the POPS service expands into all surgical subspecialties and increases its footprint in bone health and hip fracture care. The multidisciplinary POPS team provides preoperative assessment and optimisation for high-risk older patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery, following patients through their surgical admission by coordinating and delivering medical care, rehabilitation, and discharge planning. The team is fully embedded at GSTT, with established care pathways and close collaboration with anaesthetic and surgical departments. It holds a local, national, and international reputation for delivering quality care to complex older surgical patients. The team also offers formalised training programmes in perioperative medicine for foundation year doctors (FY1 and FY2), specialist registrars, and allied health professionals. Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate intellectual flexibility, looking beyond existing structures and traditional care boundaries to develop effective and innovative service delivery. They will actively participate in shaping the future service, engage in quality improvement programmes, contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate interdisciplinary teaching, and have opportunities to be involved in an established research programme. The post holders will work within the wider Department of Ageing and Health at GSTT, which comprises 26 consultants with various subspecialty interests and a strong reputation for innovative service delivery, training, and research. Candidates may also pursue other subspecialty interests locally negotiated alongside these bespoke POPS roles. As an organisation committed to evolving services to meet patient needs, flexibility in working patterns is essential to maintain first-class patient care. Please note this vacancy may close early if sufficient applications are received.
Experience
Applicants are not required to have formal subspecialty training in perioperative medicine for older people but must demonstrate intellectual flexibility and the ability to innovate within clinical service delivery.
