We are seeking a confident Maintenance Assistant to carry out a range of day-to-day maintenance tasks to ensure the hospital is maintained in a safe, efficient, and functional order. You will work within a recovery-focused mental health setting, supporting patients with a wide range of psychological and emotional needs, including those with dual diagnoses and those detained under the Mental Health Act. This role requires a calm, respectful, and professional approach, maintaining confidentiality and contributing to a supportive environment.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include general maintenance tasks such as basic plumbing, electrical repairs, carpentry, and painting. You will conduct routine inspections of facilities and equipment, respond promptly to maintenance requests, and ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations. Supporting the maintenance team with planned preventative maintenance schedules, assisting with moving and setting up equipment and furniture, maintaining accurate records, and reporting any major repair needs are also key aspects of the role. You will help ensure a safe environment, particularly considering the needs of vulnerable patients, and carry out weekly checks on fire alarm points, fire exits, door retaining devices, and emergency lights.

Requirements

Experience
Previous experience in a similar maintenance, facilities, or handyman role is preferred. Basic knowledge of building systems including plumbing, electrics, and general repairs is required.

About you
You are skilled at DIY and general maintenance, able to communicate effectively at all levels, and capable of recording detailed and accurate maintenance information. You are friendly, conscientious, an excellent team member with a positive attitude, and able to work sensitively within a mental health environment. Having a car driver’s license is advantageous.

Qualifications
No formal qualifications are specified; however, a willingness to learn and adhere to safe working practices is essential.
