About the Role
The main duties include dealing with customer enquiries both on the telephone and face to face at the enquiry desk, updating the database with customer information, processing claims for discounts and benefits, and taking recovery action against debtors. You will be part of a highly motivated and successful Revenue and Benefit Service team committed to achieving the highest collection rates, lowest processing times, and best customer experience for residents and businesses across the borough.
The Revenue Service covers the collection of Council Tax, National Non Domestic Rates (NNDR), and Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). It plays a fundamental role in the financial well-being of the Authority by maximising income available to meet strategic aims and objectives. Responsibilities include maintaining an accurate database of liable persons, reviewing and deciding discounts and exemptions, and undertaking debt recovery procedures through the Magistrates Court, County Court (bankruptcies and charging orders), fines, and bailiff action.
The Benefit Service ensures financial support for residents on low income, aiming to maximise income and reduce the risk of homelessness. It administers Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction Scheme, and the Discretionary Housing Payment Fund. The Service also plays a significant role in welfare reform changes, working collaboratively with other Services, partner organisations, and the voluntary sector.
Experience
Experience in customer service and working within a benefits or revenue environment is desirable but not explicitly stated. The role requires the ability to handle enquiries efficiently and accurately update records.
