About the Role
As the Weekend Supervisor and Lead Driver, you will act as the operational lead for the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) during weekend shifts, taking ownership of the overall running and flow of the department. You will monitor patient case lists, waiting times, and department flow, working closely with the Shift Lead and Senior Nurse to identify pressure points and take timely action. You will coordinate the non-clinical team, delegating tasks to ensure reception, streaming support, and administrative functions operate safely and efficiently.
You will support departmental escalation and surge plans, liaising with the Emergency Department and site team to maintain flow during high demand periods. As a visible presence in A&E, you will support colleagues and uphold the partnership aims of the service to ensure patients receive appropriate support.
Operational responsibilities include resolving issues such as IT failures, equipment and estates problems, supplies, and security concerns, reporting faults as necessary. You will use de-escalation skills to prevent and defuse potential conflicts and handle complaints and concerns locally where possible, escalating according to clinical governance processes. Incident reporting and accurate logging of significant events are essential, with immediate referral of clinical concerns to the Shift Lead, Senior Nurse, or GP on duty.
You will act as the first point of escalation for staff on shift, managing staffing gaps, operational problems, vehicle and transport issues, and other matters affecting service delivery. Escalation to senior management will occur only when issues cannot be resolved within the role’s scope. You will maintain an accurate log of weekend issues, actions, and decisions, and provide a written handover to the UTC Service Lead on Monday mornings.
In your role as Lead Driver, you will lead and manage the UTC driver team, fostering positive communication among drivers, GPs, UTC colleagues, and external partners. You will coordinate the driver rota in compliance with working time regulations and manage annual leave and sickness via the digital HR system. Conducting annual appraisals and ensuring HR compliance, including licence and DVLA checks, driver assessments, and mandatory training, will be part of your responsibilities.
You will arrange vehicle servicing, MOTs, and repairs, ensuring vehicles and equipment are fit for use. Vehicle checks must be completed each shift, with vehicles kept clean, secure, and maintained. You will oversee the secure handling of drugs and clinical equipment during shift handovers, recording usage and conducting regular stock checks. Accurate completion of timesheets, vehicle log sheets, and logbooks is required.
Monitoring daily transport performance and producing monthly driver and transport reports for the UTC Leadership Team will be expected. You will support the induction and guidance of new drivers, promote lone working safety, maintain knowledge of the fleet, and cover driving shifts as needed.
General duties include using Microsoft Outlook and other systems for communication and administration, contributing to team and wider Greenwich Health meetings, supporting policy and procedure implementation, and ensuring Health and Safety and Risk Management standards are met. You will undertake clerical or administrative duties as necessary and maintain the knowledge and skills required to perform the role effectively, seeking advice when appropriate.
