About the Role
His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for administering the criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales, as well as non-devolved tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland. HMCTS provides a fair, efficient and effective justice system delivered by an independent judiciary, ensuring timely access to justice for all court users.

Legal Operations within the Royal Courts of Justice and Upper Tribunal offers high-quality legal and operational support to the judiciary across the Court of Appeal, High Court, Upper Tribunal, and specialist jurisdictions. This senior legal role involves providing expert legal advice, case management, and decision-making support to ensure proceedings are conducted fairly, efficiently and in accordance with legislation and judicial guidance.

Senior Casework Lawyers operate with a high degree of autonomy, managing complex and significant casework, exercising delegated judicial or quasi-judicial functions, and acting as trusted advisers to judges, court users and justice partners. They also provide professional leadership, contribute to continuous improvement of legal services, and maintain consistent professional standards across Legal Operations.

Jurisdiction-specific responsibilities and specialist expertise are detailed in annexes, including the Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) where additional delegated responsibilities and specialist functions apply.

- Experience managing complex legal casework autonomously, resolving legal and procedural issues effectively.

- Committed to delivering high-quality legal services and continuous improvement.
- Able to provide professional leadership, coaching and mentoring within your area of expertise.
- Adaptable and proactive in managing complex and sensitive cases with integrity and discretion.
