About the Role
Much Better Adventures books small-group adventure holidays run by local, independent guides in wild places around the world. We're a certified B Corp on a mission to get more people into the world's wildest places, support the local businesses who protect them, and prove that adventure travel can be a force for good. As a community and VC-backed scale-up in one of the fastest-growing sectors of travel, we operate as a remote-first team with annual company meet-ups.
We're building a small, highly skilled, AI-first data team and growing quickly. Our data platform has evolved to support this growth, featuring Snowflake, a rigorously tested dbt project, daily ingestion from around 25 sources, orchestration in Dagster, and infrastructure defined in code on AWS. This is a unique opportunity to join a modern, well-architected platform with no legacy burden and full ownership from day one. You will not inherit someone else's roadmap but will decide the platform's future direction.
As Senior Data Platform Engineer reporting to the Head of Data & Analytics Engineering, your role will be broad and varied. You might write incremental dbt models against Snowflake, troubleshoot Dagster assets, and deploy AWS Step Functions via CDK all in the same week. We move quickly and trust is essential in our remote team. We prioritize doing things properly — with tested models, monitored pipelines, and infrastructure that is understandable and maintainable.
Your responsibilities will include owning our Snowflake warehouse and dbt project (around 300 models and 1,700 data tests), managing daily ingestion from multiple sources such as Segment, HubSpot, Google Ads, Meta, and TikTok, running AWS infrastructure defined in CDK (Step Functions, Lambda, S3, Athena, Iceberg), leading observability in Datadog, and maintaining platform health by quickly resolving issues and preventing recurrence. You will also use AI tools throughout your work and help shape how a modern, AI-first data team operates.
Experience
- Strong SQL and hands-on production experience with a cloud warehouse, ideally Snowflake (BigQuery or Redshift acceptable)
- Solid dbt experience including incremental models, tests, macros, and project structuring
- Consistent data instrumentation and collection for web tracking, with hands-on Segment experience
- Confident Python programming for ingestion, orchestration, and service code
- Experience with modern orchestrators such as Dagster, Airflow, or Prefect, including operational aspects like retries, backfills, and freshness monitoring
- Infrastructure-as-code and cloud fundamentals, preferably AWS with CDK or Terraform
About You
- You care deeply about accuracy, especially around attribution, commission, and revenue numbers
- Thrive in a fast-paced, fast-growing business environment and enjoy shaping a young function
- Strong multi-tasking and project management skills to handle multiple models, pipelines, and changes simultaneously
- Comfortable working independently in a remote team, self-motivated and well-organized
- Deeply comfortable working natively with AI tools, with experience chaining systems together for seamless workflows
Qualifications
- Proven track record in data platform engineering or similar roles
- Bonus points for experience with dlt or building ingestion from marketing and CRM APIs
- Experience with BI tooling such as Hex or Metabase
- Familiarity with TypeScript for infrastructure development
- Experience in e-commerce, travel industry, marketplace, or subscription businesses is advantageous
