About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Designer to join the National Theatre's Creative Studio team. Working under the direction of the Co-Head of Creative Studio - Design, the Senior Designer leads the development and delivery of high-quality, brand-led creative work across the National Theatre.
The Senior Designer is responsible for originating and executing projects from concept through to completion, with a particular focus on evolving and maintaining the National Theatre’s brand across a wide range of touchpoints – ensuring it remains distinctive, coherent and engaging for increasingly diverse, younger and global audiences. Projects span campaign identities, editorial and exhibition design, and motion graphics across Marketing, Digital, Learning and Development and other organisational areas.
A hands-on practitioner, the Senior Designer combines creative excellence with the confidence to lead projects, direct collaborators and contribute to the development of others. The role includes responsibility for the full lifecycle of projects, including art direction and the commissioning of external creatives such as photographers, illustrators and animators, working closely with the Studio Manager and internal partners to ensure successful delivery. The Senior Designer also plays a key role in setting creative standards within the studio – leading by example, collaborating effectively across teams and contributing to a culture of high-quality, thoughtful design.
Working with us will give you complimentary staff tickets for shows and guided tours (subject to availability and policy), 25 days annual leave increasing up to 32 with length of service (plus bank holidays), development programmes via e-learning and specialist in-person training, access to interest-free season ticket loan and cycle scheme partnership, enhanced sick pay, family friendly policies including family leave and support leave, pension schemes, sabbatical option (subject to agreement), on-site staff canteen and social facilities, occupational health support, in-house mental health and wellbeing advisors, wellbeing programme of events, exclusive staff talks, discounted access to National Theatre at Home, volunteer leave, and discounts in the NT’s bars, cafés, restaurants, bookshop and local businesses.
Experience
Extensive experience as a designer, in-house or agency, with a strong portfolio of high-quality, original creative work.
Strong expertise in brand design, with the ability to develop, evolve and apply visual identities across a wide range of platforms and outputs.
Proven ability to lead integrated design projects end-to-end across print, digital and motion, including art direction and commissioning of external creatives, managing multiple concurrent briefs to deadline under pressure.
Highly developed design craft skills, including typography, layout, colour and image-making, with strong attention to detail.
Motion and animation capability, with a good understanding of motion principles and experience using tools such as After Effects.
About you
A confident, hands-on creative leader who can inspire and direct others while maintaining high standards.
Collaborative and able to work effectively across teams.
Committed to producing thoughtful, high-quality design that engages diverse and global audiences.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications stated, but a strong portfolio and demonstrable skills in design and motion graphics are essential.
