About the Role
The Senior Phototesting Technician/Technologist will organise and carry out clinical phototesting on patients as part of the clinical investigation of photosensitivity within the Photodermatology Unit. This includes complex procedures such as monochromator and solar simulator phototesting, minimal erythema and phototoxic dose testing, requiring considerable care and attention to detail. The role involves managing patient admissions for phototesting and other investigations, providing specialist clinical advice on photoprotection and topical therapy under consultant supervision, and supervising calibration and quality control of complex optical equipment. The postholder will maintain clinical databases, produce monthly and annual reports, and collaborate with other Photodermatology centres and the Medical Physics Department. They will lead training programmes for technologists and nursing staff, manage appraisals, and participate in recruitment. The role supports the smooth running of the Photodermatology service, ensuring compliance with Trust policies, quality standards, and risk management. The postholder will also teach MSc students and course delegates, support research projects, coordinate clinical research studies, and contribute to the development of new phototesting techniques. They will participate in departmental and Trust-wide activities, maintain professional standards, and ensure high-quality, cost-effective patient care. The role requires active engagement with continuing professional development and involvement in regional and national groups to develop standards and guidelines.
Experience
Extensive experience in clinical phototesting and managing complex clinical procedures related to photosensitivity. Proven ability to organise and lead clinical services, including training and competency assessment of staff. Experience in coordinating clinical research studies and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Experience or willingness to engage in formal training and appraisal processes. Compliance with mandatory training and professional standards.
