About the Role
At Engine by Starling, we are on a mission to partner with leading banks worldwide who aim to build rapid growth businesses on our technology. Engine is Starling's software-as-a-service (SaaS) business, originally built to power Starling and now operating as a separate entity. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to lead projects or functional areas within the Engine team and platform. You will contribute to our award-winning platform and internal tooling, build new features and products from scratch in a configurable way, and share your knowledge to foster a strong learning culture. You will own your projects, working collaboratively in small teams across the bank to deliver impactful solutions.

Experience
We value aptitude and attitude over specific experience or qualifications. While our backend codebase is primarily Java, you do not need to be an expert upon joining. Experience or familiarity with the following technologies is beneficial but not mandatory:
- Java
- AWS & GCP (cloud-native environments)
- Microservice-based architecture
- Kubernetes (EKS)
- TeamCity for CI/CD with multiple daily production releases
- Terraform and Grafana

About you
You are passionate about clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing, and continuous deployment. You care deeply about finding elegant solutions to complex technical problems and enjoy working collaboratively across teams. You are engaged, customer-focused, and eager to contribute to transforming banking globally.

Qualifications
We are open-minded regarding formal qualifications and focus more on your ability to learn, adapt, and deliver quality software. A positive attitude and willingness to grow within a fast-paced engineering environment are essential.

Interview Process
Our interview process is conversational and designed to be a two-way discussion, allowing you to get to know us as we get to know you. Typically, the process includes:
- Initial interview with an engineer (~45 minutes)
- Take-home technical test
- Technical interview with engineers (~1.5 hours)
- Final interview with CTO or deputy CTO (~45 minutes)
