About the Role
If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives, HM Treasury offers an exciting opportunity to influence decision making that affects the whole of the UK. Working at the heart of government, you will collaborate across government to promote responsible public spending and drive strong and sustainable economic growth. The work ranges from protecting customers through financial sector regulation, reducing carbon emissions and creating a greener economy, to promoting British trade globally and supporting jobs and growth across the country. HM Treasury is part of the Darlington Economic Campus, a cross-government hub bringing people together to tackle key national issues while working closer to the communities served.
This role provides the opportunity to work on some of the most important long-term macroeconomic issues facing the UK to influence better policy outcomes for households and businesses. You will contribute to work across the branch and HM Treasury’s analytical community, ensuring evidence influences policymaking. Responsibilities include managing, delivering and communicating economic analysis to support policy development, while building expertise in macroeconomic modelling with training and support provided.
Core responsibilities include:
- Leading analytical projects on longer-term and structural issues facing the UK economy, responding to economic and policy priorities through impactful analysis and advice.
- Leading on application and development of HM Treasury’s overlapping generations model (UK OLG) across a range of policy issues. This model analyses the impact of shocks, trends and policies on the UK macroeconomy in the long term, reflecting household behaviour changes over their lifecycle. Opportunities to work with other macroeconomic models, including Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling, will also be available.
- Building expertise on climate macroeconomics through qualitative and quantitative analysis, with climate likely to remain a key focus.
- Communicating economic analysis effectively across the department and government, including presentations and written advice for senior leaders.
- Building and maintaining collaborative relationships across government and externally to ensure analysis influences policy development and supports HM Treasury’s strategic priorities.
- Supporting the Economics Group’s corporate agenda, promoting wider objectives and contributing to a positive working environment.
Experience
Experience in applying econometric analysis and quantitative modelling is advantageous but not essential. Training and support will be provided to build expertise in macroeconomic modelling and analysis.
About you
You should be motivated to influence policy through rigorous economic analysis and able to communicate complex economic concepts clearly and concisely. You will be able to work independently, manage competing deadlines, and establish effective working relationships with colleagues across different roles and perspectives. Enthusiasm for contributing to long-term economic and structural issues, including climate macroeconomics, is important.
Qualifications
A degree in economics or an equivalent analytical qualification is required. Evidence of this qualification will be requested if invited to interview.
