About the Role
Working at HM Treasury places you at the heart of government, influencing decisions that directly impact the UK economy and people’s lives across the country. This role offers a unique opportunity to advise Ministers, shape economic policy, and contribute to the Government Economic Service (GES) profession’s vision to champion economics in government through high-impact, high-quality economic analysis.
As the Economist and Strategy Lead, you will coordinate delivery and reporting against the current GES Strategy, which supports a profession of approximately 3,700 members across 50+ departments. You will deepen economics capability across the Civil Service and enhance its impact on public sector delivery and government policy.
You will provide authoritative advice to GES leaders and departments, ensuring governance, technical assessment, recruitment, professional development, and member engagement align with the GES Strategy and Technical Framework. This role involves building strong relationships with senior economists, including Departmental Chief Economists and Directors of Analysis, and leading best practice across government.
This is an excellent opportunity for an economist with leadership skills and strategic vision to influence government-wide economic capability and professional standards, including integrating emerging technologies such as AI into the profession’s work.
Experience
Proven experience working with economics, economists, or analytical professions to deliver strategic projects, improve capability, or strengthen professional standards across organisations. Experience in leading professional assessments and coordinating cross-government initiatives is highly desirable.
About you
You are a proactive economist with strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills. You can operate strategically, understand the wider policy and stakeholder landscape, and align work to organisational or cross-government priorities. You build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders and influence decisions effectively. You are committed to diversity and inclusion and can manage teams and projects to deliver high-quality outcomes.
Qualifications
Applicants must either be existing members of the Government Economic Service (GES) or meet the minimum academic requirements for GES membership, which include:
- A first or upper second-class honours degree in economics (or international equivalent), or a postgraduate degree in economics.
- For joint economics degrees, at least 50% of total course credits must be in economics.
- Study of both macroeconomics and microeconomics is required.
Shortlisted candidates who are not full GES members will be required to complete a technical assessment as part of the recruitment process. Full GES members will proceed directly to the role-based interview.
