About the Role
The multi-Oscar-winning creative Film & Episodic Studio at Framestore collaborates with some of the greatest storytellers in film today. We work closely with directors and producers throughout the filmmaking process to design, plan, and create stunning images, focusing on innovative creative solutions that support their vision and set new standards for visual effects in cinema. Driven by creativity and inspired by the future, Framestore combines talent and technology to bring life to everything we create.
This existing role within our Visual Development team is for a versatile, creatively curious artist who enjoys solving complex visual puzzles across the full 3D pipeline. Blender is central to how our team designs and crafts key sequences early in production, powering work on shows like IF, Loki S2, and How To Train Your Dragon.
With Blender as your primary tool, you will move fluidly between modelling, look development, lighting, and rendering, working on creatures, environments, and FX to define visual benchmarks and address creative and technical challenges early in production.
Key responsibilities include developing high-end, photorealistic visual development assets across a broad range of subjects—from creatures and characters to full environments and complex FX—taking designs from blockout through to finished frame. You will sculpt and detail creatures, build and dress environments, and art-direct FX moments such as destruction, fluids, smoke, and particles to establish look, scale, and mood early on.
You will work end-to-end in Blender—modelling, sculpting, shading, texturing, lighting, and rendering—adapting to whichever part of the pipeline a given problem requires. Building look development and lighting setups that withstand photoreal scrutiny, creating shaders and materials using Blender’s node system, and using procedural and node-based workflows like Geometry Nodes and simulation to iterate environments and FX at pace are essential parts of the role.
Collaboration with supervisors and the Head of Department ensures your work supports a smooth transition into 2D/3D production, handing off clean, well-structured scenes. You will communicate your creative process clearly, breaking down complex technical workflows for both artists and stakeholders, fostering a culture of continuous learning and process sharing.
Experience
Extensive Blender experience across the full generalist pipeline including modelling, sculpting, UVs, shading/texturing, lighting, and rendering. A strong visual background with a portfolio demonstrating frame and shot composition. Solid experience in film VFX 3D processes and a good understanding of cinematography in virtual environments. Proven ability to build look development and lighting setups that stand up to photoreal scrutiny, including shader and material creation using Blender’s node system. Familiarity with procedural and node-based workflows such as Geometry Nodes, and comfort scripting small tools is a plus. Working knowledge of complementary DCCs such as Maya, Houdini, ZBrush, Substance, and Nuke is desirable. Experience with Digital Matte Painting or simulation and FX work (cloth, fluids, particles, hair/fur) is advantageous. Familiarity with texture packages like Mari and practical knowledge of cameras, lighting, or physics is beneficial.
About you
A proactive artist who identifies and resolves visual issues while maintaining quality and logical consistency. Able to take direction well and maintain organized scenes, .blend files, node setups, and documentation. Strong communication skills to clearly articulate creative and technical processes to artists and stakeholders. Enthusiastic about continuous learning and sharing knowledge within the team.
Qualifications
No specific formal qualifications are required; however, a strong portfolio demonstrating relevant skills and experience is essential.
