About the Role
The British Museum operates within a complex and evolving technology landscape. As a Business Analyst, you will act as an internal consultant at the intersection of business need, technical design and technology strategy. Working primarily on projects designed to strengthen the British Museum’s resilience in the face of cyber security threats, you will help keep systems, processes and data aligned with changing organisational needs while avoiding unnecessary technical debt. Working across the Museum, you will bring clarity to complex situations, steer discovery and translate organisational challenges into practical, well-considered interventions. These may include redesigning business processes, reconfiguring existing platforms, defining integrations and targeted customisations, or introducing new technologies where they add clear value. You will work with stakeholders who bring different priorities and perspectives, shaping options and recommendations that support assured decision-making. Your analysis and designs will have genuine scope to influence project direction and be carried through into delivery, while ensuring solutions align with enterprise architecture principles, statutory obligations and the Museum’s long-term direction.
Key Responsibilities
Manage discovery and internal consultancy activity to identify business challenges, opportunities, current and target states, and clearly documented findings. Elicit, analyse and manage requirements throughout the project lifecycle, working closely with Product Owners, Project Managers, technical teams and compliance colleagues. Develop and assess solution options across processes, platforms, integrations, customisation and new technology, ensuring recommendations maximise public value and align with strategy and enterprise architecture principles. Act as the bridge between business stakeholders, technical specialists, governance boards and external suppliers, translating requirements into viable services that meet statutory obligations. Manage multiple small to medium-sized assignments, prepare governance reporting and help strengthen the Museum’s business analysis standards and processes.
The Masterplan
The British Museum is undertaking its biggest transformation since its founding nearly 300 years ago. This physical and intellectual transformation includes large scale building and gallery transformation, new ways of connecting with audiences and different ways of working. As we look towards this exciting future, we remain guided by the words of our founder Hans Sloane - who dreamed of a museum connecting all arts and sciences, which would be accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Benefits
Free exhibition entry for you and guests, exclusive private views, ICOM and reciprocal museum access. Civil Service Pension Scheme defined benefit with considerable employer contribution. 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays and 2.5 privilege days (and +5 days after 10 years). Social and wellbeing perks including staff parties, social clubs, CSSC sports and leisure, and support from the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship. Learning and development through courses, mentoring and Athena as well as support for professional qualifications. Enhanced parental leave including maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave. Support for carers through Employers for Carers.
Values
Our values drive everything we do, from how we handle our objects to how we work in our team to fostering a culture where everyone feels heard and empowered: Care Deeply, Embrace the Unknown, Spark Curiosity, Value Many Voices. These values are a core part of how we recruit and are reflected throughout the application, interview and selection process.
Experience
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to classify, structure and make sense of complex information. Experience engaging a diverse range of stakeholders, facilitating workshops and using discovery techniques to understand needs, question assumptions and build consensus. Previous experience delivering written reports in a professional or academic environment. Familiarity with formal methodologies related to business analysis, discovery and project management. Experience with procurement and in the public sector is advantageous but not essential.
About you
Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills, including the ability to produce clear documentation, process maps, reports and recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences. Confidence and curiosity to question requirements constructively, evaluate options and translate business needs into viable solutions. A collaborative and resilient approach with the ability to plan your own workload, manage competing priorities and contribute to continuous improvement.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are stated as mandatory, but support for professional qualifications is available as part of the Museum’s learning and development programme.
