About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced museum curator to help shape exhibitions that bring the ancient world to audiences internationally. You will work within the British Museum’s International Engagement team and alongside curatorial colleagues to develop and co-curate exhibitions drawing on the Museum’s ancient world collections. A key priority will be co-curating an exhibition exploring Byzantium, currently in development, while also contributing to the future international exhibitions programme.

The role combines scholarship, creativity and public engagement, requiring a collaborative approach to exhibition-making alongside the ability to take ownership, make connections and pursue strong curatorial ideas. You will translate academic research and complex ideas into engaging, accessible experiences for public audiences. This role may involve occasional international travel.

Key responsibilities include co-curating the Byzantium exhibition, developing other international touring exhibitions, proposing new exhibition concepts, building relationships across departments, researching and producing exhibition narratives and content, working with project colleagues and international venues, and supporting exhibition promotion through presentations, tours, lectures and media activity.

The British Museum is undergoing its biggest transformation in nearly 300 years, aiming to connect arts and sciences and make the Museum accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Ability to communicate academic research and complex ideas clearly and engagingly to non-specialist audiences, supported by public engagement experience. Excellent research and writing skills to produce authoritative yet accessible exhibition interpretation and academic content. Collaborative mindset with confidence in building relationships across curatorial and specialist areas. Initiative to independently develop ideas and progress projects while knowing when to collaborate. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence and work tactfully with a wide range of internal and international stakeholders. Strong organisation and self-discipline to manage multiple projects effectively.
